The end of the nineteenth century
and the beginning of the twentieth gave rise to a movement in
the decorative arts which became known as Art Nouveau. Glass
designers such as Lalique and Galle, stained glass designers
such as Jaques Gruber and craftsmen and artists in all disciplines
became influenced by this style. Art Nouveau inspired a freshness
of approach to design deriving directly from nature and expressing
itself in the distinctive flow of lines where images from nature
become entwined in a sinuous flow of lines. In Scotland Charles
Renie Mackintosh provided a unique expression of this new style
in his architecture and his interior designs including his stained
glass designs. Louis Comfort Tiffany in the United States is
often seen as inspired as an Art Nouveau designer with his glass
and metal designs using nature to provide inspiration in form
and colour.
This range of lamps, designed
by Peter Baker are inspired considerably by this period of design
and creativity.
